Andrea Benediktsdottir is awarded the Iris Scholarship for aspiring women
Andrea Benediktsdottir, PhD student at the Department of Medicinal Chemistry, is awarded the Iris Scholarship for aspiring women in Sweden. With the scholarship, Andrea Benediktsdottir will participate in an interdisciplinary course focusing on antibiotics given in Veyrier-du-Lac, France.

“I feel both happy and proud to be awarded the Iris Scholarship. With the money I will finance a trip to The ICARe Course in Veyrier-du-Lac, France. It is a course where young researchers within the fields of antibiotic will analyse new methods and discoveries together with leading experts from academia and industry. The meeting will last for nine days in October and I was recently informed that I am one of a total of 40 researchers who are invited to participate,” says Andrea Benediktsdottir.
The iris scholarship is awarded annually for the purpose of supporting the education of aspiring women in Sweden. Recipients include women who work or aim to work in areas of importance to other women. This may apply to the possibility of establishing new research findings with a women's perspective in areas such as medicine and nursing.
“The spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a global and acute threat to all branches of modern healthcare. To reverse this trend, we must collaborate across both scientific and geographical boundaries, and my ambition is to convey current knowledge from The ICARe Course to students and researchers at Uppsala University who work with a focus on antibiotics.” states Andrea Benediktsdottir.
The Iris scholarship is awarded by the Iris Jonzén-Sandbloms and Greta Jonzén Foundation. Iris Jonzén-Sandblom (1900–1999) was herself a progressive woman who at the age of eighteen achieved a bachelor degree by correspondence at Hermods. She moved on to study trade and language at Filiph Holmqvist's Handelsinstitut in Gothenburg. With the purchase and management of properties as well as advantageous money investments, Iris built a considerable fortune that formed the basis for both an impressive art collection and the Iris scholarship.
