Luke Odell promoted to Professor of Medicinal Chemistry
The Faculty of Pharmacy congratulates Luke Odell on his promotion to Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at Uppsala University. “Research is a joint effort, so this is a recognition that our entire team can take pride in,” states Luke Odell.

Luke Odell, researcher in preparative medicinal chemistry and program coordinator at the Master's Programme in Drug Discovery and Development, has been promoted to Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at Uppsala University. Luke Odell focuses his research on the development of chemical tools for, among many things, molecular and antibacterial imaging.
“It is of course extremely gratifying news to receive, but is also something our entire team can take pride in. After all, research is a joint effort where each person plays an important part, and as my supervisor from my PhD years in Australia pointed out: it is undoubtedly an honorable recognition to receive at a university that is consistently ranked among the world's foremost.”
Luke Odell was recruited in 2006 as a postdoc in Professor Mats Larhed's research group in Preparative Medicinal Chemistry at the Department of Medicinal Chemistry. Today, Luke Odell leads his own team that, among numerous achievements, has developed a chemical compound for Mass Spectrometric Imaging of the brain's neurotransmitters, which is today used at universities and companies all over the world.
“It is a technology that has already enabled several important discoveries and whose potential we continue to refine for new areas of use. In parallel, with the support from national platform ENABLE-2, we continue to work on a novel chemical class that shows promising properties in the search for new antibiotics. We are also in the midst of an evaluation of the Master's Programme in Drug Discovery and Development where we, in addition to high grades, are provided with valuable guidance for future development.“
