Diseases in the blood vessels of the brain - Cerebrovascular diseases - is currently causing twelve percent of all deaths in Sweden, making them the third most common cause of death in our country. In parallel, international research is making important progress. Not least at Uppsala University, where a number of groups is working along the front line of the field, and 18-22 June they will welcome colleagues from all over the world to the Cerebrovascular Biology 2023 conference.
“This is an international summit which, after a pandemic break, returns in grand style. Already in May we reached the maximum number of participants the premises can hold, and are currently counting to representatives of 30 countries on five continents. Uppsala University's strong reputation in our discipline is undoubtedly contributing to the great interest, and we recently received requests from a Japanese delegation to arrive early in order to visit the Faculty of Pharmacy,” says Irena Loryan, Researcher at the Department of Pharmacy.
Work on the scientific content of the meeting began in 2019 – when Uppsala received the trust to host the upcoming conference – and the organizing committee can today present a program that covers every aspect from early preclinical research to new treatments. The list of confirmed lecturers at Uppsala Concert & Congress includes Uppsala's foremost in the field as well as several international portal figures.

“We are very pleased with the program which balances current progress with upcoming challenges. All program items are highly interesting, but of course, there are certain keynote speakers that we are extra happy to welcome to Uppsala. For example, Katerina Akassoglou from San Fransisco whose results are paving the way for a series of new treatments, as well as Robert Thorne of Denali Therapeutics and the University of Minnesota and his work on transporting biotherapeutics through the blood-brain barrier,” says Margareta Hammarlund-Udenaes, Professor em. at the Department of Pharmacy.
The organizing committee, in collaboration with Destination Uppsala, also places great importance on creating a full experience for their international guests. Both activities and environments form a selection of the best the city has to offer: From the introduction in the university main building's historic Faculty rooms to the conference dinner in Uppsala Castle’s Hall of State. And that the meeting is held in connection with the Swedish midsummer is no coincidence.
“A successful conference of this kind can generate invaluable goodwill for the organizing university. Alongside our research, Uppsala's history arouses great interest, and over 100 participants have already chosen to extend their stay to experience the Midsummer celebrations in Old Uppsala. Our junior researchers are doing impressive work with the social program, and we know that this is an opportunity that will give them many important contacts in their future careers,” says Irena Loryan.
