Maria Kjellsson and Sara Mangsbo new Professors at the Faculty of Pharmacy

The Faculty of Pharmacy congratulates Maria Kjellsson and Sara Mangsbo, newly appointed Professors of Pharmacokinetics and Protein and Antibody Drugs respectively. With these appointments, the Department of Pharmacy is the first department of our faculty to have more women than men among its professors.

In late August, Maria Kjellsson was appointed Professor of Pharmacokinetics at the Department of Pharmacy. During her - so far - twenty years at Uppsala University, Maria has had a central role in several significant advances: Partly as a researcher with a focus on diabetes diseases and tuberculosis, but also as a teacher at the Faculty of Pharmacy's undergraduate and Master programmes, where Maria has a far-reaching commitment in the work with the rapidly increasing internationalisation.

“We are currently, among other things, developing algorithms for an app to improve communication between physician and patient in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and associated diseases, for example by showing how lowered blood pressure and weight loss reduce the risk of cardiovascular and diabetic kidney diseases. At the same time, exciting things are happening in our educations, where we continuously strengthen the conditions for internationalisation with both an accessibility and climate perspective, which is something I'm really passionate about,” says Maria Kjellsson.

Tuesday 19 September, Vice-chancellor Anders Hagfeldt also signed Sara Mangsbo's appointment as Professor of Protein and Antibody Drugs at the Department of Pharmacy. Sara was recruited to the Faculty of Pharmacy in 2017 as part of Uppsala University's investment in biological drugs in pharmacy. Since then, Sara Mangsbo has been named Entrepreneur of the Year, received the Hjärnäpplet innovation award and earned a place on IVA's 100 list of Sweden's most promising research projects with her acclaimed method Adaptable Drug Affinity Conjugate.

“It is incredibly inspiring to take part in establishing a completely new research environment – and even more so doing it in collaboration with Greta Hultqvist, also a researcher with a focus on Biological drugs. Together, we have developed several courses, recruited skilled teachers and committed ourselves to training a new generation of researchers. That I am now granted the opportunity to continue our journey as a Professor will generate added values and is something I am very much looking forward to,” says Sara Mangsbo.

The appointments also mean that the Department of Pharmacy for the first time ever has more women than men among its Professors – something that has not previously happened at the Faculty of Pharmacy since its foundation in 1968. Lena Friberg, newly appointed Head of the Department of Pharmacy, sees this as the result of an inclusive and positive working climate with room for both female and male role models with successful research careers.

“I am very happy that we, as the first Department of our Faculty, have managed to achieve a good balance. My hope is that we, by motivating our employees and adding positive energy, can inspire even more young women to an academic career, which I am convinced will contribute to a broader approach throughout our organisation,” states Lena Friberg, Professor of Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics.
