Friday 10 November, national competence center SweDeliver welcomes to the third of this semester's four half-time seminars. This time, Xiguo He, PhD student at the Department of Pharmacy, will present her research project A nanosized drug delivery platform for optimal intestinal absorption of poorly permeable with focus on oral antibiotics, carried out in collaboration with the Uppsala Antibiotic Center.
“The global use of antibiotics has been increasing consistently for the past twenty years as a result of improved access to health care. Providing antibiotics orally is both safer and more cost-effective than intravenous delivery, but strategies for increased bioavailability and fewer side effects in the gastrointestinal tract are still needed, which is the focus of my doctoral project,” says Xiguo He.
In her work, Xiguo He is designing nanoparticles to increase stability in the gastrointestinal tract, improve drug solubility and enable transportation of the desired dose of antibiotics to the correct site of absorption. The nanotechnology will be coupled to in vivo relevant digestion-permeation assays to determine the biological fate. Furthermore, mechanistic cell studies will allow the exploration of molecular interactions and mechanisms behind absorption.

At Xiguo He's half-time seminar, the following committee will attend:
- Linus Sandegren, Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology, Infections and Immunity, Uppsala University.
- Hanna Barriga, Research Specialist at Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics Medical Systems Bioengineering, Karolinska Institute.
- Johan Engblom, Head of department/Professor of Biomedical Technology at Malmo University.
