Join as the Faculty of Pharmacy inaugurates 3 new Professors

In the third week of November, Uppsala University invites you to the 2023 inauguration lectures. At the Faculty of Pharmacy, Luke Odell, Sara Mangsbo and Maria Kjellsson have been promoted to Professors and will present their research on 15 and 17 November in the Uppsala University Main Building.

“That our relatively small faculty inaugurates three new professors is of course very positive. They all conduct research in fascinating areas and I can warmly recommend everyone with an interest in science to listen to their lectures,” says Dean Mathias Hallberg, who will introduce the Professors in room IX on Wednesday 15 November at 2:05 p.m.

First on the podium is Sara Mangsbo, new Professor of Protein and Antibody Drugs, who will lecture on Pharmacologically Controlled Immune Defense, The utopia that became reality (Farmakologiskt styrt immunförsvar, utopin som blev verklighet). Sara was recruited in 2017 as part of Uppsala University's investment in biological drugs in pharmacy. Since then, Sara Mangsbo has been named Entrepreneur of the Year, received the Hjärnäpplet innovation award and earned a place on IVA's 100 list of Sweden's most promising research projects with her acclaimed method Adaptable Drug Affinity Conjugate.

Wednesday, we will also listen to Luke Odell, new Professor of Medicinal Chemistry, who will lecture on New chemical tools for more efficient drug development (Nya kemiska verktyg för effektivare läkemedelsutveckling). Luke was recruited in 2006 as a postdoc in Preparative Medicinal Chemistry and is today leading his own team that have, among many things, developed a new class of chemical compounds for Mass Spectrometric Imaging of the brain's neurotransmitters – a method currently used at universities and companies worldwide.

At the Inauguration of Professors in the Uppsala University Main Auditorium 17 November, Maria Kjellsson, new professor of Pharmacokinetics, will lecture on The best dosage of a fistful of drugs (Bästa doseringen av en näve läkemedel). During her 20 years at Uppsala University, Maria has had a central position in several scientific advances regarding diabetes diseases and tuberculosis, and also as a teacher at the Faculty of Pharmacy's undergraduate and Master programmes, where Maria has a far-reaching commitment in the work with the rapidly increasing internationalisation.

“It is a great honor to be given the task of representing the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy on such a solemn occasion. My lecture will describe the field of pharmacokinetics from a popular science perspective: Why does it take some time for drugs to have the intended effect? How can you know in advance that the effect of a dose will remain for a certain time? What will happen if you combine several drugs and how do we know that we are using available drugs in the best possible way," says Maria Kjellsson.
