The Faculty of Pharmacy congratulates Erik Jansson, Associate Professor of Spatial Mass Spectrometry, on receiving SEK 1.4 million from the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research to increase our understanding of how drugs affect the body's proteins at molecular level. The project will be carried out in collaboration between Uppsala University and Pelago Biosciences.

Erik Jansson, Associate Professor at the Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences, receives SEK 1.4 million in the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research's program Strategic Mobility 2024. With this program, SSF increase knowledge transfer and cross-fertilization between different sectors, and Erik Jansson will, in collaboration with Pelago Biosciences AB – a company conducting contract research in biotechnology and drug development – develop tools for analyzing drug impact on the body's proteins at molecular level.

“Many drugs work by binding to specific proteins and affecting their functions. Modern technology is generating enormous amounts of data about these interactions, but interpreting and analyzing all the information requires increasingly advanced tools. Through machine learning and statistical models, we aim to identify patterns and learn more about how drugs work, the side effects they may cause, how we can improve them while also mapping off-target effects when drug affects proteins other than the ones intended, states Erik Jansson.

The project, Bayesian Analysis for Proteomic Drug Development, is one of a total of ten project awarded grants in Strategic Mobility Program 2024 give researchers the opportunity to develop in a new environment.
