Luna Prieto Garcia winner of the Rosenön Award 2024

The Rosenön Award Luna

The Faculty congratulates Luna Prieto Garcia on being awarded the 2024 Rosenön Award by the Swedish Pharmaceutical Society for her PhD thesis Mechanistic Based Pharmacokinetic-Pharmacodynamics models for Drug Interactions and Disease Population Predictions.

In January 2024, Luna Prieto Garcia defended her thesis at Uppsala University's Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences. Last week, the Swedish Pharmaceutical Society announced Luna as the receiver of The Rosenön Award 2024 for this year's best thesis in the fields of drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.

“I am very honored to receive this prestigious award and would like to express my gratitude to my supervisors Erik Sjögren, Anna Lundahl, Christine Ahlström, Hans Lennernäs and Rasmus Jansson Löfmark who made this thesis possible,” says Luna Prieto Garcia.

Rosenön Award-winning thesis

In her thesis, Luna Prieto Garcia, today PKPD Modeling Senior Scientist at AstraZeneca, highlights the challenge to determine the right dose of a drug due to the many factors affecting the balance between positive effect and toxicity.

“My thesis aim to use mechanistic mathematical models to help determine optimal dose of drugs for a group of patients with specific characteristics, such as kidney disease, or concomitant medication. I have also compared different mathematical software that can be used for such calculations,” says Luna Prieto Garcia.

Luna’s results show that PBPK models can be applied to help physicians establish the optimal dose based on the patient's profile and co-medication. They also show the importance of taking into account the differences of diverse software when choosing which software to use and while interpreting the results.

The Rosenön Award recognizes the year's best PhD thesis in order to stimulate research in drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics and/or pharmacodynamics. When selecting the awardee, the jury honors, among other things, Innovative thinking, Research collaborations, Applicability and innovation of the thesis and Scientific quality.

Luna Prieto Garcia will accept The Rosenön Award 2024 and present her results 12-13 November at the Swedish Pharmaceutical Society 17th Symposium on Pharmacokinetics and Drug Metabolism in Gothenburg.
