Peter Langguth new Honorary Doctor at the Faculty of Pharmacy

Peter Langguth ny hedersdoktor

“Peter Langguth more than meets all the criteria for an excellent choice of Honorary Doctor,” states Mathias Hallberg, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, who in January welcomes Peter Langguth, Professor at Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, to the highly exclusive group of Honorary Doctors of Pharmacy at Uppsala University.

“It is with pride and gratitude that I accept the appointment as Honorary Doctor of Pharmacy at Uppsala University’s Faculty of Pharmacy. It is a tradition and an institution whose good reputation I am well acquainted with, and I am very much looking forward to experience the conferment ceremony together with the distinguished awardees of this honor,” states Peter Langguth, Professor of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmaceutics at Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz.

With his appointment, Professor Langguth joins the exclusive group that unites world-leading researchers, the high ranks of Big Pharma and several Nobel Prize laureates. In January, Lynne Taylor, Professor of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy at Purdue University, and Dag Larsson, Senior expert policy at Lif, the research-based pharmaceutical industry in Sweden, were introduced – and with the appointment of Peter Langguth, the group welcomes yet another highly merited reinforcement.

“Professor Langguth is an exceptional researcher whose work has contributed invaluable knowledge to the pharmaceutical sciences, not least for the development of mRNA-based vaccines against COVID-19. That Langguth is also a committed, generous and highly regarded collaborator in our faculty's operations makes him an utterly deserving Honorary Doctor of Pharmacy,” says Hans Lennernäs, Professor of Biopharmacy at Uppsala University.

Professor Langguth's academic curriculum vitae confirms a remarkable body of work. With 352 highly-cited publications, he has paved important ground in both biopharmacy and galenic pharmacy. The close ties to Uppsala's Faculty of Pharmacy were established in the 1990s and have since encompassed everything from guest lectures to shared leadership of OrBiTo, the successful IMI project where European academia and industry developed new tools and expertise in oral bioavailability.

Winter conferment ceremony at Uppsala University

“To Initiate collaborations early on in a career is an effective foundation to identify shared interests. Over time, opportunities will arise for activities that unite academia, industry and regulatory bodies – which in turn will envision ideas for joint research projects of benefit for all parties. I know that Uppsala's Faculty of Pharmacy is home to many talented Professors, and my view is that a program with shared goals can pave the way for further progress,” reasons Peter Langguth.

Uppsala University's Winter conferment ceremony 2026 – celebrating its 426th anniversary – takes place Friday 30 January in the University Grand Auditorium. The long-standing tradition begins at 7:00 am when the Jämtland Field Artillery fires a cannon salute at Uppsala castle's northern tower. During the ceremony, the faculty's promoters present the tokens of honour – hat, diploma and ring – to doctors and honorary doctors, followed by a mingle in the University Main Building before the festivities continue with a banquet in the Hall of State at Uppsala Castle.

“A solid foundation when choosing a new honorary doctor is an already established och fruitful alliance where we identify great added value in continued developed collaboration. Peter Langguth more than meets these criteria and our hope is that this appointment will contribute to both ongoing and future collaborations. For now, I wish Professor Langguth a wonderful experience in Uppsala and a grand Winter conferment ceremony,” states Dean Mathias Hallberg.
