The Faculty of Pharmacy remembers Per Manell

Per Manell, pharmacist, entrepreneur, Medical officer of health and one of the Faculty of Pharmacy's most highly profiled alumni died in Uppsala on 4 March at the age of 73 years. “Per Manell was a driving spirit and a true source of inspiration. He will be deeply missed,” states Mathias Hallberg, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Per Manell enrolled at Uppsala University in the 1960s when he began his studies as a pharmacist. After graduating, Per continued his career at the Faculty of Pharmacy as a teacher in social pharmacy before being recruited to the National Board of Health and Welfare's pharmaceutical department, where he eventually was appointed Medical officer of health. During his long and successful career, Per Manell made many essential pioneering efforts to implement IT in the field of pharmacy, achievements for which he received, among other things, the Pharmacist of the Year award in 1985 and the Rune Lönngren Prize in 2008.

“Per was a driving spirit that has made great contributions to Uppsala University and the Faculty of Pharmacy. He was involved in starting the Farmis Alumni association and also initiated the Farmis Mentor academy. He was genuinely concerned that the students would have a useful network and a good start to their professional lives. Per Manell is a true source of inspiration that will be deeply missed,” says Mathias Hallberg, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy.

In 2017, the Medical officer of health Per Manell's prize was established, rewarding the best presentation of a master thesis at the Faculty of Pharmacy. The winner receives expenditures to do a study trip, which so far has provided students at the Faculty of Pharmacy the opportunity to visit, among others, EFPIA in Brussels and the WHO in Geneva.

“Per Manell personally funded the prize, which further confirms his great generosity and sincere commitment to the Faculty of Pharmacy's educations and students. Per was also for many years a much appreciated guest at the award ceremonies, and I know that we will all remember Per with the greatest affection,” says Anja Sandström, Deputy dean at the Faculty of Pharmacy.
