The Department of Medicinal Chemistry congratulates PhD student Ottilia Andersson on receiving the Iris Scholarship for aspiring women in Sweden. “It feels incredibly inspiring,” says Ottilia, who plans to use the scholarship to participate in an international course with a focus on antibiotics.

Ottilia Andersson, PhD student at Uppsala University’s research environment for Drug Design and Discovery, is awarded the Iris Scholarship 2025. Iris Scholarship Ceremony 2025

“The award ceremony took place on Tuesday 1 April at a ceremony in Gothenburg where all recipients were given the opportunity to present how they will use the scholarship. It was an extraordinary experience to participate on site, and of course it feels incredibly inspiring and honorable to receive such an important scholarship,” says Ottilia Andersson.

The Iris Scholarship is awarded annually for the purpose of supporting the education of aspiring women in Sweden who work or aim to work in areas of importance to other women. This may apply to the possibility of establishing new research findings with a women's perspective in areas such as medicine and nursing, and with the doctoral project that Ottilia is carrying out within the framework of the Uppsala Antibiotic Center, she aims to contribute to the development of and understanding of new antibiotic classes.

“The spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a global and acute threat that we can only meet with colaboration across both scientific and geographical boundaries. The interdisciplinary approach is one of the Uppsala Antibiotic Center's main strengths, and with the Iris Scholarship, my plan is to participate in an international course where a number of young researchers are given the opportunity to analyze new methods and discoveries together with leading experts from academia and industry,” says Ottilia Andersson.
