"Elite Discourse and Power Relations in Music"
This presentation introduces the Swedish Research Council-funded project Constructing Music Life through Elite Discourse, a three-year study examining how power relations in Swedish music life are constructed by actors in positions of authority. The project focuses on leaders within key interest organisations operating under the umbrella of Musiksverige, such as rights organisations, unions, and professional associations.
The purpose of the project is to critically examine how elite discourse constructs music
life. Drawing on critical and multimodal discourse analysis, the study combines interviews with organisational leaders, analyses of official texts, and observations of public events. In the presentation, we outline the project’s conceptual framework, research design, and situate it in relation to previous research. By directing analytical attention towards elite discourse, the project aims to contribute a relational and structural understanding of how inequalities in music life are maintained, contested, and potentially transformed.
