New study: Song lyrics have become more repetitious, angry and personal

Variation is smaller, choruses more numerous and are more frequently about emotions, according to scientists who have analyzed 12 000 hit songs from 1980 onwards.

By analyzing 12 000 English language hit songs released between 1980 and 2020, scientists have found signs that the lyrics have become more repetitious over the years, according to a study published in the scientific journal Scientific Reports. - I think that song lyrics having become more repetitious, personal and depressing is in accordance with the development of society over the past decades, says Christine Dysers, postdoctor in musicology at Uppsala University.
