Basic Pharmaceutical Science
Developing new drugs takes a long time, often more than 10 years. It is an extensive process to turn suitable molecules into finished products. Once a medicinal product reaches the market, it is also important that it is used correctly and by the right target group. Pharmacists play a key role at every stage of this development and usage.
Both the pharmacy and pharmaceutical science programs begin with an introduction to how drugs are discovered, developed, and used. From the outset, students gain an understanding of drug structure and its effects, the drug's path through the body, how to administer drugs, and the role of pharmacies as information providers and distributors of drugs. We discuss safety aspects, the role of authorities, human trials, and much more. The studies include teaching in both large and small groups, and presentation exercises such as writing tasks and oral presentations are recurring elements.
The research activities at the department focus on drug development, primarily in the field of biological addiction research, but also within pain and dementia research.
