Translational PKPD conference arousing international interest

September 14-15, the conference Translating PKPD - (Retro)Perspectives brings the world of Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics to Uppsala University. "It is inspiring to welcome such a significant part of our scientific field,” says Irena Loryan at the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Two days in September, 126 participants will gather at the Uppsala Biomedical Center and the conference Translating PKPD – (Retro)Perspectives. The forum can be described as a global summit within the field of Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics (PKPD) with several leading representatives from both academia and industry among the confirmed speakers.

“We have placed great emphasis on balancing breadth and cutting edge in the program, and today we can present a lineup that we are very proud of. Nevertheless, we are pleasantly surprised by the great national and international interest in our conference, and it is very inspiring to welcome such a significant part of our scientific field to Sweden and Uppsala University,” says Irena Loryan, researcher at the Department of pharmacy.

The rapidly expanding discipline of Translational PKPD can be traced back to 1937, when Torsten Teorell, Professor of Physiology at Uppsala University, published two articles with the joint title Kinetics of distribution of substances administered to the body. The ground-breaking content would in time render Teorell the epithet Father of Pharmacokinetics and also establish the discipline's position at the university.

“In 1980, Lennart Paalzow was appointed Uppsala University's first professor in our field. I overtook the position in 1999, and along the way, our environment has made several contributions of high scientific significance. In particular, our studies of molecular transports across the blood-brain barrier and methods for analysing pharmacologically relevant, unbound concentrations in the brain are of great value to the international pharmaceutical industry,” states Margareta Hammarlund-Udenaes, professor em.

Currentlythe field is facing a number of scientific crossroads, which is also emphasized in the conference agenda. During the second day, a discussion will focus on how already established methods are best utilized, as well as which strategies are most likely to move the discipline forward. The panel includes representatives from both universities and the pharmaceutical industry, but the audience is also welcome to join the debate.

“Uppsala University's environment for Translational PKPD is in a positive generational shift, and this conference is a fantastic platform for our younger researchers to expand their international networks. In parallel, it gives us an opportunity to demonstrate the value of experimental research and measuring your results, which formed the basis for several of our most important results as well as the importance of Translational PKPD for modern drug development,” says Margareta Hammarlund-Udenaes.
