Rodolfo Cunha Carnier, University of São Paulo, visiting PhD student at Uppsala: "Is Tarski's Theory of Truth a Correspondence Theory of Truth?"
Abstract
In this seminar I address the issue of whether Tarski's theory of truth is a correspondence theory of truth. But contrary to what we find in most of the works on this subject, I will argue based on the application of Tarski's theory of truth in the philosophy of science. My main contention is that any view on this issue depends on how the relationship between structures and reality is conceived, which, in turn, hinges upon certain philosophical assumptions. One of these assumptions has to do with what a structure represents and what is the nature of that representation. Another assumption has an ontological character insofar as it has to do with the existence of possible worlds.
