The field of van der Waals materials has recently welcomed the discovery of magnetic materials with magnetization persistent down to a monolayer. This has opened an avenue for rethinking previously explored magnetic phenomena, such as the magnetization manipulation with laser pulses traditionally investigated in metallic ferromagnets. In this talk, I will present our investigations of the optical and magneto-optical response of magnetic two-dimensional semiconductor CrI3, unravelling an unusual interplay of exchange interaction and electron-lattice coupling using time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. Such unique interplay could open up the exciting prospect of extending the all-optical control of magnetism down to the monolayer limit.
