Seminar: A dear child has many names - Production of the light neutron-capture elements

  • Date: 29 September 2022, 14:00–15:00
  • Location: Ångström Laboratory, 80101Å

Elements heavier than iron are produced via neutron capture, with roughly half being produced via the slow (s)-process and half via the rapid (r)-process. In the early Universe, the r-process is the dominant process. However, a large scatter is detected among the light neutron-capture elements such as Sr, Y, and Zr, with some stars, for example, HD122563, exhibiting large enhancement in these elements. Furthermore, studies have revealed that the abundances of light neutron-capture elements such as Ag and Pd do not correlate with the abundances of heavier r-process elements such as Eu, suggesting a separate nucleosynthesis process is responsible for the creation of elements like Ag and Pd. Multiple papers have identified this process giving it different labels; the Light Element Primary Process, the weak r-process or the limited r-process. I will attempt to give an overview of the current status of the production of the light neutron-capture elements in the early Universe and present new results from the R-Process Alliance investigations into the production of these elements.

We will go to lunch at 12:20. There will be fika in the astronomy corridor (Hus 9 Plan 5) after the seminar.

The seminar might start a few minutes later than usual because the room is being used before us.
