Seminar: Radio Detection of Ultra High Energy Neutrinos

  • Date: 21 September 2023, 14:00–15:00
  • Location: Ångström Laboratory, 101132Å
  • Type: Seminar

Detection of neutrinos at ultra-high energies (UHE, E >1017eV) would be one of the most important breakthroughs in astroparticle physics in the 21st century and would open a new window to the most violent phenomena in our universe. Their small flux and cross-section require the instrumentation of huge volumes which can be achieved with a sparse array of radio detector stations installed in polar ice sheets.

In this seminar, I will present the status of radio detection of UHE neutrinos. I will give an overview of the landscape of radio-neutrino experiments and explain the detection principle. I will report on the results from the pilot arrays ARA and ARIANNA, the status of the Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G) that is currently being constructed and the plans for the IceCube-Gen2 observatory at the South Pole. I will briefly discuss how we use deep learning to accelerate the research field and report on my ERC project on AI based optimization of future radio neutrino detectors.

We shall leave for lunch at around 12:15. There will be fika after the seminar.
