Visit by Astronomers from Tartu Observatory
On February 12-13, 2024, astronomers from Tartu Observatory visited the Ångström laboratory at Uppsala University within the twinning project EXOHOST 2024.
The goal of the project is to empower Tartu Observatory in Estonia to be more competitive within European research. The project is carried out in a collaboration between astronomers at Tartu Observatory, Uppsala University, University College London and the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Graz.

Within the project, the researchers share specialist knowledge and experience in research, research administration and research organisation with Tartu Observatory.
The purpose of the visit was to share experience within stellar spectroscopy but also an overview of how applications and evaluations for project applications in astronomy are carried out. During the visit, two one-day workshops were held on Instrumentation and proposal writing and Spectral Surveys, with just over 20 participants from Tartu Observatory, Uppsala University, University College London, Vilnius University and the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
“It was a successful visit. It is clear that Tartu Observatory is facing a rejuvenation phase, and it is important to create good international contacts. And it is also always better to meet in person, especially if you must work intensively together,” says Eric Stempels, researcher at the Department of Physics and Astronomy and one of the initiators of the project.
At the end of the workshop, the researchers brainstormed ideas to find more opportunities for collaboration. It is hoped that the contacts will continue long after the EU project has reached its end. The next time the project participants meet will be during a research school in Tartu in September later this year.
EXOHOST
EXOHOST, Building Excellence in Spectral Characterisation of Exoplanet Hosts and Other Stars, is an EU project within HORIZON Coordination and Support Actions, which runs for two years until the end of December 2025.
