The Department of Physics and Astronomy hereby invite all interested to a docentship lecture in high energy physics.

Chairperson: Professor Arnaud Ferrari

Representative of the Docentship Committee: Professor Stephan Pomp

Abstract:

Neutrinos, nature's "cosmic ghosts", are elusive subatomic particles that hold the key to understanding some of the most enigmatic phenomena in the universe. This introductory lecture aims to unveil the captivating world of neutrinos, their unique properties, and their pivotal role in shaping our knowledge of the cosmos. We will begin by exploring the fundamental nature of neutrinos, including neutrino oscillations, and how neutrinos interact with matter. With their ghostly behavior, neutrinos provide a unique perspective on the universe, unattainable through traditional observational methods. We will delve into the connections between neutrinos and astronomical phenomena, and will gain insight into the ways in which neutrino observations have enhanced our understanding of some of the most extreme environments in our Universe. Finally, the lecture will touch upon modern neutrino detectors and experiments, which have paved the way for groundbreaking discoveries in particle physics and astrophysics. From the quest to detect the cosmic neutrino background to the search for the highest energy neutrinos, the journey of these enigmatic particles has just begun.

The lecture is an obligatory teaching test for those applying for admittance as docent and it should be possible for students and others with basic academic education in the relevant field to follow it. The lecture lasts 40-45 minutes with subsequent discussion. The lecture will be given in English.
