Low Energy Ion Scattering (LEIS) is designed to address a simple question: What is the atomic composition of a sample's surface? Modern high-sensitivity LEIS instruments, such as the Qtac100, are highly effective for this type of research. One of these instruments has been utilised at CEITEC (Central European Institute of Technology) for various systems over the past ten years. However, the traditions and theories surrounding scattering have a much older history in Central Europe. We will begin by exploring this historical context, then discuss the current applications of LEIS at CEITEC, and finally propose some ideas for future research.
