The ESS is a large neutron research facility under construction in Lund, Sweden. Via nuclear reactions at its tungsten target, the facility will produce a long list of radioactive spallation products that could be spread in the environment after an accident or during maintenance operations. The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) has established a list of the radionuclides that would contribute the most to the effective dose received from exposure to ground deposition, following a worst-case accident. In this project, we will explore the migration rate, uptake, and transportation in soil and crop plants found in the surrounding farmlands of ESS and deduce the exposure rate to humans, which could strengthen future safety standards.
