In this talk, I will explore how energic ion beams can be employed both to modify material properties – often at the (nearly) atomic scale – and to characterize the composition and crystallinity. I will present two recent case studies from our research in Leuven: (i) a real-time RBS (Rutherford backscattering spectrometry) study to track the formation of thin silicide and germanide layers, and (ii) the controlled formation of color centers in diamond using ion implantation.
