Lithium-ion batteries currently dominate the rechargeable battery market for various electronic devices and electric vehicles. However, further research is required to achieve higher energy and power densities, improved safety, and better sustainability. This thesis focus on fluorine-free electrolyte, higher-capacity anode, and solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs). In this thesis, photoelectron spectroscopy is applied to study the degradation of electrolytes and the inelastic mean free path for SPEs. Here, I present the preferential degradation of a fluorine-free electrolyte on a silicon-graphite composite anode, the degradation of SPEs in contact with lithium, and the determination of inelastic mean free path for SPEs using the overlayer method.
