New funding for research on psychosocial health after childhood cancer

Lena Wettergren and associated researchers in the Fex‑Can research program have received funding from the Swedish Childhood Cancer Foundation for a project that will investigate the long‑term psychological, health‑related, and socioeconomic consequences of childhood cancer.

The study compares young adults who were treated for childhood cancer (the Fex‑Can Childhood cohort) with matched controls from the general population. The researchers will use data from eleven national registers, as well as clinical and self‑reported information on aspects such as quality of life and mental health.

The aim is to:

  • gain a clearer understanding of life after childhood cancer
  • identify risk factors for negative psychosocial outcomes
  • contribute to more targeted support interventions within healthcare

The project is made possible thanks to the support of the Swedish Childhood Cancer Foundation, and the results may strengthen both clinical guidance and follow‑up for adults who were treated for cancer during childhood.
