In this project, CHAP is collaborating with the non-profit human rights organisation Doctors of the World to map the healthcare experiences of undocumented migrants living in Sweden.
No one knows exactly how many undocumented migrants currently live in Sweden, but the number has been estimated to around 100,000. Many experts believe that the number of undocumented migrants in Sweden will increase.
According to a law from 2014, undocumented migrants are entitled to subsidised ‘care that cannot wait’. For many years, voluntary organisations have argued that the law is arbitrary, making access to healthcare uneven and unpredictable; even though undocumented migrants are entitled to certain types of care, they cannot be sure what care they will receive if they seek it.
In this project, we investigate undocumented migrants' experiences of seeking healthcare in Sweden and their experiences of care at Doctors of the World's medical clinics. We are doing this through qualitative interviews. The project will run during autumn 2025 and spring 2026.
