The Center for Russian Studies has become the Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies. On July 1, the University Board at Uppsala University decided to set up a department at the Faculty of Social Sciences, called the Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies, IRES.

Consequently, Uppsala University continues a long tradition to the study of politics, culture and social relations in Russia and the post-Soviet region. Russian studies started in the late 1960s and its first chair in East State Research was established in 1983. Today, the research is more vital than ever. At the institute our research is multidisciplinary and focused on Russia and the post-Soviet area. About forty researchers make up a wide and unique academic competence that extends across the entire humanities and social sciences. The researchers, who are recruited both nationally and internationally, forms a critical mass for innovative and creative research, and the institute, with its multidisciplinary profile, is the only one of its kind in Sweden. Thus, the Institute for Russia and Eurasia Studies forms a national knowledge center for studies of current trends as well as historical and cultural perspectives in Russia and the post-Soviet area.
