International scholars gather in Kiev to discuss Soviet history
(Image removed) On 15th and 16th April 2019, historians with expertise on different Soviet Republics presented their work at the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv. Led by Professor Li Bennich-Bjorkman (Uppsala University) and Dr. Saulius Grybkauskas (Lithuanian Institute of History) and with the workshop organised by Professor Sergiy Kurbatov (National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences), historians presented on a wide range of topics about the Soviet Republics of Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Georgia, Uzbekistan and Moldova. IRES postdoc Dr. Michael Loader presented a paper about a wave of political purges that took place across the Soviet Republics in the post war period. This cutting-edge research will be formulated in a book volume entitled Negotiating Constituencies: Nomenklatura, Networks and Nationalism in the Soviet Periphery.
