Sofie Bedford takes part in a panel discussion on elections in Armenia
On 19 May, Dr. Sofie Bedford participated in a panel discussion organized by Östgruppen on the topic of “The Elections in Armenia – What is at Stake?”. The discussion focused on the upcoming parliamentary elections on 7 June, often described as a pivotal election for the country’s democratic development.
The conversation took place between Sofie Bedford and journalist and Caucasus expert Rasmus Canbäck, and was moderated by Stig Fredriksson from the board of Östgruppen. Together, they analyzed Armenia’s current political situation and the key choices the country is facing. Particular attention was given to issues concerning the rule of law, economic development, and Armenia’s security challenges, as well as the broader state of Armenian democracy.
The panel also explored the main issues shaping the election campaign, the most influential political actors, and the possible consequences of the election outcome — both for the Armenian population and for the wider region. The discussion was held at the Armenian cafe Café Olive in Stockholm.
Following the discussion, Östgruppen presented its human rights award “A Free Voice” to the 2026 recipient, Rasmus Canbäck.
