Application Swedish for Academics

This page contains information about the Swedish for Academics courses in Uppsala. The course is only available to employees at Uppsala University, including PhD students.

If you work on Gotland, you can instead audit the courses Basic Swedish 1 and Basic Swedish 2 which are offered in Visby. After passing the course, your credits will be registrered on Swedish for Academics instead. At the moment we do not offer the equivalent of Swedish for Academics 3 and 4 on Gotland.

About aplication to the courses in Visby

Important dates spring semester 2026

  • 15th of September 2025: The application for the spring 2026 courses opens.
  • 15th of October 2025: The application closes (we do not accept late applications).
  • 10th of November – 24th of November 2025: Diagnostic test in Inspera. The test i digital, takes two hours, and can be done from home at any point during this period. You sign up for the test when you apply for the courses.
  • 7th of January 2026: Admissions notices are sent by email to all applicants.
  • Week 4 or 5: Swedish for Academics course start.

Course levels

There are 4 levels of Swedish for Academics. You can read about the various levels in Medarbetaringången:

Swedish for Academics 1-4

We don't offer all levels every semester. Under "Courses" below, you can see which courses are offered during the current and coming semester.

If you are a beginner in Swedish, you should apply for Swedish for Academics 1. If you have previous knowledge of Swedish, these are the possible ways to apply for a course at a higher level:

  1. If you have previously passed a Swedish for Academics course (or a Basic Swedish course as a student) at Uppsala University, you can apply directly for the next level. If you are currently studying Swedish for Academics, you also apply for the next level right away, even though you heven't passed the exams yet.
  2. If you have previous knowledge of Swedish, you can sign up for the diagnostic test. This is done when you apply for the courses. You will then receive an invitation to complete a digital test which will place you at the correct level. If you apply for the test, it is important that do the test (or contact us if you are unable to). Otherwise your application will be denied.
  3. If you have documented knowledge of Swedish, such as SFI, which is less than 6 months old, you can also choose to apply based on this documentation. This option is also chosen in the application. If you choose this, you are responsible for emailing us your documentation before the deadline stated in the application, or your application will be denied.

Swedish for Academics is financed by the university. Due to the current budget, we are sadly not able to offer all levels of Swedish for Academics each semester. The list below will be updated regularly.

Application

For spring 2026 it is possible to apply for Swedish for Academics 2 and Swedish for Academics 3.

The application for the spring 2026 courses closed on the 15th of October. It is not possible to send in a late application.

Please note that you are not guaranteed a spot because you apply. Spots in the courses will be given on a first-come-first-served-basis. We often receive more that double as many applications as we have spots, so we recommend applying as soon as the application opens.

Application Swedish for Academics spring 2026

The application for Swedish for Academics autumn 2026 opens on the 15th of March.

Good to know

  • The courses are only available for employees (including PhD students) at Uppsala University.
  • If you have prior knowledge of Swedish, we recommend that you take the diagnostic test. This way, you will get placed at the correct level.
  • If you have taken a course (Swedish for Academics or Basic Swedish) at the Department of Scandinavian Languages before, you don't need to write the diagnostic test to apply for the next level.
  • If you participate in a Swedish for Academics course this semester, you should apply right away. You will not be able to apply after receiving your exam results.
  • The selection is done on a first come, first served basis.
  • If accepted to the course, we will register you in Ladok. Self-registration will not be possible.
  • Usually classes take place on Fridays 9.15 - 12.00 throughout the semester.
