Infografic EUROFAST

Why EUROFAST?

The new ESAIC preoperative fasting guideline recommends a one hour minimum fasting time for clear fluids. This represents a major change in the practice of pediatric anaesthesia. During the transition to shorter fasting times on a global scale, we need a large multicenter audit to monitor the incidence of pulmonary aspiration.

Who can join?

Any hospital with more than 1000 paediatric cases per year can join EUROFAST.

What is the main outcome?

The primary outcome is the incidence of confirmed pulmonary aspiration.

What are the secondary outcomes?

Secondary endpoints are the incidences of vomiting or regurgitation without aspiration, and suspected aspiration events. We will also analyze risk factors associated with aspiration events.

When do we start?

Recruitment has already started but centres may join until December 31st 2022. Data will be collected from 1 January to 31 December 2023.

How does it work?

Each participating centre reports two kinds of data: general information on the number of procedures requiring general anaesthesia or sedation, and detailed information on any aspiration or regurgitation events. The Swedish Ethical Review Authority has approved the main study, but centres from outside of Sweden may have to apply to their local ethics committee to transfer their audit data. A template for data transfer agreement can be found on the website.

Who do we contact?

The study administration is based in Uppsala, Sweden. The principal Investigator is Peter Frykholm, Department of Surgical Sciences, Uppsala University, 751 85 Uppsala, Sweden,
