The study behind the article led by Charlotte Blease at Uppsala University, finds that a significant proportion of UK GPs have integrated generative AI tools such as ChatGPT into their clinical workflows. The findings highlight the rapid rise of artificial intelligence in healthcare - a development that has the potential to revolutionise patient care, but also raises relevant ethical and safety issues.
One of the first investigations of its kind, the study, which received considerable media attention, found that 1 in 5 GPs reported using generative AI tools. Dr Blease is currently leading annual follow-up studies in the UK, and through FORTE-funded research, is also investigating clinician and patient use of generative AI tools in Sweden.
