On 20–24 November 2023, Uppsala Biobank is giving the course Biobanksprov i medicinsk forskning 1,5 hp (Course Biobank tests in medical research 1.5 credits). The course consists of lectures, study visits and group work.
The course is primarily intended for doctoral students in the field of medicine/pharmacy (or similar) who intend to or are already researching biobank samples, as well as other staff who work with or come into contact with biobank samples. On 1 July this year, a new biobank law became effective and this means, among other things, changes in the area of information and consent, that the scope is expanded and that the Principal Investigator can become a biobank principal directly. An expanded scope means that (traceable) samples taken outside health care will also be covered by the Biobank Act.
The course consists of lectures and a group work that is presented orally. The lectures include, among other things:
– Laws and regulations (e.g. the new Biobank Act, the Ethical Review Act and GDPR)
– How to apply for access to samples - application forms and documents
– Information from research support units at Uppsala University Hospital.
– Prospective biobanking
– Research projects in different subject areas that use biobank samples
– Opportunities and limitations of new analysis techniques
– Healthcare-integrated biobank service etc.
