Summarising Vision:Medfarm
When the Disciplinary Domains were tasked with implementing Uppsala University’s Goals and Strategies 2020, Medfarm began its journey towards Vision:Medfarm. We will now summarise this work, and the Vice-Rector invites all staff to a closing seminar with discussion and networking.
A vision that provided direction
When the process of formulating a new vision, new goals and new strategies began in autumn 2020, strict pandemic restrictions were in place. Despite this, hundreds of staff members contributed to the joint effort, and in 2021, Vision:Medfarm was formulated.
“Implementing a strategy is about getting people to collaborate in order to achieve results together. Encouragingly many participated and have continued to engage in this important work. Vision:Medfarm has provided both inspiration and guidance,” says Vice-Rector Mats Larhed.
From vision to results
Vision:Medfarm is built on a clear structure: from vision and mission to main goals, sub-goals, initiatives and indicators. In total, the document includes five main goals, 24 sub-goals and 54 concrete actions to strengthen the development of the Disciplinary Domain.
Many actions have been handled within regular activities of boards, committees and the Faculty Office. Others have been driven through dedicated reviews and working groups, not least within the framework of the major resource allocation review conducted in 2022. Some actions could not be prioritised, but many have served as important guideposts in Medfarm’s work.
Experiences of measuring goals and development
Oskar Fahlén Godö, Analyst at the Faculty Office for Medicine and Pharmacy, has led all stages of the process.
“The overall structure of Vision:Medfarm – vision-mission-main goals-sub-goals – has worked very well. However, it has been difficult to prioritise resources to implement everything, and it has been challenging to ensure that the indicators provide tangible operational value.
“An important lesson for future goals and strategy work could be to focus on fewer, but more strategic, goals. That said, Vision:Medfarm has nonetheless served as a strategic document that, for more than five years, has provided central guidance for Medfarm,” says Oskar.
Final report and closing seminar
Vision:Medfarm will conclude in spring 2026. The final report, presented to the Disciplinary Domain Board, outlines what has been implemented and which experiences can be developed further. The Vice-Rector now invites all staff at Medfarm to a closing seminar.
“I would like to invite everyone to a seminar where we can discuss what we have accomplished and what Vision:Medfarm has resulted in. Together, we can take pride in the work and draw important conclusions for the future,” says Mats, and concludes:
“We formulated the visions as follows: ‘The Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy, through research, education, development and innovation of the highest quality, contributes to better health and a better society.’ It remains as strong as ever.”
