Pim Edelaar, SCAS and Pablo de Olavide University, gives a seminar on "Towards a Generalised Theory of Adaptive Evolution". The talk will be followed by a Q&A session.

Abstract:

“To see what is in front of one’s nose requires a constant struggle” (George Orwell).

Evolutionary biology has provided us with a completely different look on the origin and “meaning” of life, and has been applied with great success in many branches of science, from conservation, agriculture and medicine to linguistics, economy and computation. However, evolutionary theory is increasingly receiving criticism for being biased and incomplete.  I will review the three traditional requirements for adaptive evolution, and then explore to what extent these can or should be generalised such that they cover the full set of possibilities. I indeed find that this is possible and desirable. Separately and in combination, the expansion of the three requirements for adaptive evolution has very significant implications for how we understand and apply adaptation and evolution.
