Welcome to an open lecture by the 2021 Kerstin Hesselgren Visiting Professor at the Department of Sociology at Uppsala University, Sujata Patel: "Colonialism and the Making of Sociology in the Global South".
Professor Patel's work combines a historical sensibility with Marxism, feminism, spatial studies and post-structuralism to examine modernity and social theory, history of social sciences, urbanization and city-formation, social movements, gender construction, and caste and class formation in India.
Professor Patel has been a Distinguished Professor at Savitribai Phule Pune University and a National Fellow at the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, Shimla. She was a professor at the Universities of Hyderabad, Pune, and SNDT Women's University. Professor Patel was ISA Executive from 1998-2002, and its Vice President (National Associations) from 2002-2006. She was the President of the Indian Sociological Society from January 2016 to December 2017.
