From Sun to Atoms: How synchrotron spectroscopy may help understanding thin film solar cells?

Thin film solar cells are able to meet some of the challenges the world is facing by offering alternative possibilities for clean and sustainable energy production. In addition, they offer possibilities to be used in tandem solar cells with either Si or thin film bottom cell. However, thin film solar cells are very complex material systems comprised of a multitude of layers, interfaces, elements, impurities, etc. At present, the development of cost-effective and high-efficiency thin film solar cells is limited by their detailed characterization which is very challenging.  Synchrotron-based methods are able to meet the characterization challenges in thin film solar cells. In this lecture, an introduction to synchrotron light is given where we will learn about some possibilities offered at synchrotron facilities. Examples on how synchrotron light, in particular synchrotron spectroscopy, may be used to study thin film solar cells down to the nanoscale will be presented.

The lecture is an obligatory teaching test for those applying for admittance as docent and it should be possible for students and others with basic academic education in the relevant field to follow it. The lecture lasts 40-45 minutes with subsequent discussion. The lecture will be given in English.
