This seminar presents new research on the "Working Papers" left behind from the monumental German-language Bible translation by Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig, two giants of German-Jewish religious thought, in the late 1920s.
After a brief introduction to the Working Papers themselves, Associate Professor Benjamin Pollock, Hebrew University, will focus on the dialogical philosophical theology behind the translation project, giving special attention to the significance Buber and Rosenzweig assigned to the name of God and their translation of that name. Professor Hans Ruin, Södertörn University, will respond to Pollock's lecture, exploring the Romantic background to the Buber-Rosenzweig translaton, and addressing some of the peculiar philosophical questions that arise from the project. Senior lecturer Håkan Bengtsson, Uppsala University, will monitor the ensuing discussion.
