  • Date: 7 December 2023, 11:00–12:00
  • Location: Ångström 4001 and Zoom https://uu-se.zoom.us/j/68408512713 (passcode: biomimetic)
  • Type: Docent trial lecture
  • Lecturer: Dr Alina Sekretareva
  • Organiser: Department of Chemistry - Ångström
  • Contact person: Alina Sekretareva

The Department of Chemistry-Ångström hereby invites all interested to a docentship lecture in subject Molecular Biomimetics. In this lecture, Alina Sekretareva will discuss unique advantages offered by electrochemistry in unraveling the fundamental information surrounding enzyme functionality and electron-proton coupling in biological catalysis.

Achieving a clean energy economy requires the development of sustainable catalysts capable of efficiently activating small molecules like O2, CO2, and H2O. Nature provides a blueprint for this challenge through the remarkable efficiency of redox enzymes in performing small molecule activation, utilizing earth-abundant metals within their active sites. Despite the promise these enzymes hold, attempts to replicate their reactivity in biomimetic catalysts have encountered substantial obstacles, primarily due to a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the intricate reaction mechanisms employed by these enzymes.

Chairperson: professor Johannes Messinger

Representative of the Docentship Committee: professor Gunnar Westin

The lecture is an obligatory teaching test for those applying for admittance as docent and it should be possible for students and others with basic academic education in the relevant field to follow it. The lecture lasts 40-45 minutes with subsequent discussion. The lecture will be given in English.
