Abstract

In this thesis, I address the urgent need for tourism transformation. I propose tourism development and research in line with degrowth and regeneration, concepts that centralize the well-being of local communities and embrace complexity, interconnectedness, and relationality. The study aims to understand how regenerative tourism processes can be co-created through research, particularly via a research with and for approach utilizing interconnected workshops with local participants in a specific area on Gotland. I present three analytical lenses, in order to understand the process better. The first is the the-matic lens, which showcases the local understanding of regenerative tourism, comprising emic concepts such as människonära - being a welcoming com-munity, and integrerande - tourism integral to local life blurring the line be-tween visitor and local. The second is the value lens, through which I evaluate how the process was valuable for the local participants. The value mostly lied in the process itself, offering the participants new perspectives and inspiration. Finally, I use a reflexive lens to critically discuss my role in shaping the process and understandings. I synthesize these three lenses in a conceptual model I call Moments in Between, comprising three core, intertwined elements: local meaning, value, and reflexivity. The conceptual model offers guidance for researchers (and practitioners) to navigate the complexities of fostering genuine, place-based regenerative tourism development. It encourages grounding regenerative tourism in local contexts, broadening the understanding of value and engaging in continuous self-critical reflection to challenge dominant paradigms and ensure tourism truly serves local and ecological well-being.
