Uppsala’s humanities and social science scholars best in Sweden

A major new research program is receiving SEK 38 million, eleven new projects have won grants, and two infrastructure projects are to be supported. When the Riksbankens jubileumsfond (RJ, Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation) allocated nearly SEK 220 million on Thursday, one third went to Uppsala scholars.
The portion of the funding granted that went to Uppsala researchers was SEK 65 million out of a total of SEK 220 million, nearly thirty percent – a great triumph.
“Brilliant! Once again Uppsala humanities and social science scholars have proven to be best at winning research funding in competition,” says Margaretha Fahlgren, Vice Rector of Arts and Social Sciences at Uppsala University, who is delighted with the news.
Following a long and thorough review process, the RJ board decided yesterday who will be receiving research grants.
“The quality is high, and if we consider that we started with roughly 820 applications, it’s easy to see that the competition has been brutal,” says Göran Blomqvist, CEO of RJ.
With this decision, RJ will be funding 48 new three-year projects, eleven of them at Uppsala, 16 infrastructure grants to create resources for future research, and two major research programs. One of these is tied to Uppsala University and is titled “The East Asian Peace Since 1979: How Deep? How Can It Be Explained?” It is directed by Professor Stein Tønnesson, and is an interdisciplinary international project in peace and conflict research in collaboration with political scientists and gender researchers, among others. The other major program grant went to Linköping University. The Department of History at Uppsala University won as many as four project grants.
