New Vice Chancellor and Deputy Vice Chancellor for Uppsala University with new year

It has now been decided who will be the new Vice Chancellor and Deputy Vice Chancellor of Uppsala University. On January 1, Eva Åkesson will become Vice Chancellor and Anders Malmberg Deputy Vice Chancellor. On December 16 the Vice Chancellorship will be passed on at a solemn ceremony.


On November 24 the Swedish government decided to appoint Eva Åkesson as the new Vice Chancellor of Uppsala University. She assumes office on January 1, 2012. 

Eva Åkesson is professor of chemical physics and currently Deputy Vice Chancellor of Lund University. She was born and raised in Ängelholm but took her degree in physical chemistry at Umeå University, where she later completed her doctorate. She came to Lund University in 1996 as a researcher. At Lund she has had leadership positions such as Deputy Vice Chancellor and Vice Rector. Eva Åkesson has also had a number of external assignments, including evaluations of both education and research. 

- I feel I’ve been warmly welcomed by Uppsala University. I look forward to getting to know Uppsala University and to the University getting to know me, says Eva Åkesson. 

On November 25 the University Board decided to appoint Anders Malmberg as the new Deputy Vice Chancellor of Uppsala University. He assumes office on January 1, 2012.

Anders Malmberg is professor of geography, specializing in economic geography, at Uppsala University. His research deals with business location, industrial transformation and regional economic development. Since 2008 Anders Malmberg has been Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. He also holds multiple committee and board assignments, both within and outside the University. Among other things, he is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. 

- I’m of course honoured to be entrusted with this position. It will be exciting to participate in leading Uppsala University. I hope to be able to complement Vice Chancellor Eva Åkesson in various ways and help the University to maintain and advance its strong position in research, education, and collaboration with the wider community, says Anders Malmberg.
