Conference on biobanking and the value of research

Biobanking has rapidly become a hot topic over the past few years. The technology, the claims and the investments are increasing, but the route from human biological sample and registry data to real benefit for patients and public health is a complex one. Each step is intended to add value, but how do we make sure we see and increase the benefits?
A conference to be held on September 20-21 in Uppsala, Sweden will help researchers, policymakers and industry to understand and improve the route from sample to result, using interactive workshops, exhibitions, lectures and debates on exploiting the full potential of biobanking.
There are eight major themes to this conference relating to the research process (ethics & regulation, biobanking practice, sample analysis, and data analysis) and the value of biobanking (ethics & trust, health economy, clinical practice and drug development). These themes are echoed in our interactive exhibition, in keynote lectures and a knowledge sharing programme, and will be explored in more detail in interactive workshops and debates.
Our interactive exhibition takes participants through the research process from ethical review and sample preparation to sample and data analysis, and examines health economy, drug development, clinical practice, ethics and trust. Participants will also be able to see how a biobank works by donating samples and will have a chance to meet the experts and attend informal debates.
The Biobanking and Molecular Resource Infrastructure of Sweden, BBMRI.se, is the largest investment that the Swedish Research Council has made so far within the area of medical infrastructure. As biobanking is about optimizing the collection, storage and analysis of samples for medical research, BBMRI.se strives to build a national infrastructure of biobank samples from patients and healthy volunteers. This will generate new possibilities of discovering diseases at an early stage and determining the best treatment.
In 2010, BBMRI.se became a national infrastructure after an agreement between The Swedish Research Council and Karolinska Institutet. Karolinska Institutet is the host university for BBMRI.se and cooperate with all medical universities in Sweden.
