As expected, the Swedish parliament have said yes to the unification of Gotland University and Uppsala University. The two universities will become one 1 July 2013, which will be marked with both seminars and festivities.
‘After a long and intense process with many participants we can now realise our vision of Campus Gotland. Uppsala University has a long tradition of renewal and quality as a guiding light and Campus Gotland will now become an important part of our continued development work’, says Eva Åkesson, Vice-Chancellor of Uppsala University.
Erika Sandström, acting Vice-Chancellor of Gotland University, is also positive about the future direction.
‘We now see the beginning of a new development for education and research on Gotland’, says Erika Sandström. ‘Within the framework of the University we will be able to further develop our activities.’
The merging means that two public authorities will be combined into one, a process that has already been prepared to a large extent. The course offerings for autumn 2013 have also been finalised. In the first academic year there will only be minor changes, but the goal for the next few years is to further develop and launch new activities at Campus Gotland, thereby increasing the number of students and teachers in Visby. Several contacts have also been established to increase collaboration with the local community.
In the autumn 2013 a new Liberal Arts programme will be launched, a classic educational model that is available in Anglo Saxon countries and that is now gaining interest throughout Europe. At first the programme will given on a small scale, with the goal of continuously developing educations based on the University’s wide range of subject areas over the coming years.
