Uppsala professor awarded by Nature journal
Anders Hagfeldt, professor of physical chemistry at Uppsala University, has been awarded by the journal Nature for his work with mentoring young researchers at the University. 2012 year’s Nature Awards for Mentoring in Science (Nordic countries) was presented yesterday during a seminar at the Nobel Forum at Karolinska Institutet.
The prizes were presented by Philip Campbell, editor in chief of Nature, and professor Hans Wigzell, chairman of the jury for this year’s Nature Awards and former Vice-Chancellor of Karolinska Institutet.
Anders Hagfeldt is professor of physical chemistry and dean of chemistry at Uppsala University. Times Higher Education ranked him among the world’s top 50 materials scientists of the last decade, based on number of citations. In 2011 he coordinated activities around the international chemistry year in Uppsala.
‘An especially important charachteristic is the trust that Anders Hagfeldt shows his students and researchers. He has managed to create dynamic research groups united around common laboratory techniques and lively scientific discussions in the coffee room’, says Hans Wigzell.
Anders Hagfeldt shares the prize sum of 10 000 euros, which is awarded to researchers in the middle of their careers, with Jens Nielsen, professor of quantitative systems biology at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg.
Staffan Normark, professor of infectious disease control at Karolinska Institutet, was awarded the lifetime achievement award for his ‘capacity to take care of and bring forward not only early research students, but also post-doctoral scientists to do pioneering research in new fields’.
The annual Nature Awards for Mentoring in Science were launched 2005 and recognises outstanding scientific mentorship. Every year the award focuses on a specific country or countries, and 2012 focused on the Nordic countries.
