How have our cells developed? Why should you apply for patents and what is the best way to analyse our research results? These were a few of the questions raised at a scientific meeting at Uppsala University this week. 300 researchers, including everything from chemists to physicians, gathered to exchange knowledge and strengthen the multi-disciplinary field of life science.

SciLifeLab DAY the 26 March gathered speakers from both Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and several Swedish universities. Different aspects of cancer research became a common thread through several of the lectures, but nanomedicine, mechanisms behind chronic pain and new research tools were also discussed.

“One talk that I found very interesting was the one Merene Landström from Umeå University gave. She talked about signal paths in cancer cells and it was both well-described and can be applied on metastasizing which is important in cancer research”, says Maija-Leena Eloranta, researcher of rheumatology.

The day also gave visitors plenty of time for informal talk over a cup of coffee. During breaks and the poster session, speakers had the opportunity to develop and deepen the discussion with visitors. Ulrika Gunnarsson says about her talk on UU Innovation:

“We are available to researchers at Uppsala University and give them advice on patents and commercialisation. By telling people about us at this type of events we want to build awareness about us and the possibility to come to us to discuss ideas.”

SciLifeLab DAY welcomes everyone working in life science who wants to learn more about SciLifeLab and the ongoing research. The next SciLifeLab DAY will be held after summer.
