More students than ever before have applied for courses at Uppsala University the coming autumn.

Uppsala University has seen a substantial increase in the number of student applications compared to last year. 87,311 students have applied for this autumn’s courses and programmes, compared to 62,202 applicants for the autumn 2012.


The increase in number of applicants equals 40 per cent. A large portion of that increase consists of applicants for Uppsala University Campus Gotland – previously Gotland University. But Campus Gotland in itself has also seen a large increase in applications.

For the autumn 2012, Gotland University had 12,699 applicants. Now 20,858 students have applied for courses and programmes at Campus Gotland, an increase of 64 per cent.

“It is very pleasing to see that so many want to study at Uppsala University. This also shows that Uppsala University’s initiative with Campus Gotland has been successful”, says Vice-Chancellor Eva Åkesson. “At the same time it is unfortunate that we are forced to reduce our student capacity by almost 10 per cent when the number of applicants increases by as much as 40 per cent.”

“It is very inspiring for us who work at Campus Gotland that so many want to study here”, says Olle Jansson, adviser to the Vice-Chancellor for Campus Gotland. “The students seem to make the same assessment as we do, that Uppsala University is a quality stamp that strengthens our educations.”

In the top five most popular programmes at Uppsala University, the Social Work Programme has replaced the Nursing Programme in fifth place.

  • Law Programme, 6,878 applicants, +8,8%
  • Bachelor Programme in Business Economics, 5,701 applicants, +9,2%
  • Medicine Programme, 5,149 applicants, +5,2%
  • Psychology Programme, 4,477 applicants, +12,8%
  • Social Work Programme, 3,074 applicants, +13,1%

The most popular courses given at Campus Gotland are Leadership and coaching and  Web-based course of fundamental law. These two are in fact the most popular single courses at all of Uppsala University.

Several of the courses at Campus Gotland have more than doubled their number of applicants since last year:

  • Leadership and coaching, 7,5 cr., 2,295 applicants, +88%
  • Web-based course of fundamental law, 15 cr., 1,764 applicants, +95%
  • Project management, 7,5 cr., 1,537 applicants, +168%
  • Leadership and conflict management, 7,5 cr., 1,456 applicants, +100%
  • Graphic design for the web, 7,5 cr., 1,404 applicants, +233%
