Kofi Annan served as the seventh Secretary-General of the UN between 1997 and 2006. Since then, he has continued to press for better policies to meet the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly in Africa. Kofi Annan received an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University in 2007. Jan Eliasson assumed his post as Deputy Secretary of the UN last year and received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Social Sciences in 2006. Both guests have previously visited Uppsala University, notably as Dag Hammarskjöld Memorial Speakers. Eliasson has, in addition, been a frequent visiting professor and lecturer at the Faculty for the last 25 years, especially at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research.

The seminar is organized by Uppsala University in cooperation with Uppsala Association for International Affairs, Bonniers and Riksbankens Jubileumsfond.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the venue.
