Pharmacy names Anders Hallberg honorary doctor
The Faculty of Pharmacy has decided to award an honorary doctorate to Professor Emeritus and former Vice-Chancellor Anders Hallberg.
Anders Hallberg completed his doctorate at Lund University in 1980, where he was also named associate professor in 1983. In 1986 he was recruited by Astra/Draco and came to head its pharmaceutical chemistry unit, where he worked until 1990. He was then named professor of pharmaceutical chemistry at Uppsala University.
During his tenure at the University, Hallberg built up extensive and high-quality research in organic chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry with a focus on the development of new drugs for infectious diseases like HIV, hepatitis C, and malaria. Within the framework of this research, innovative methods were developed for synthesizing potential pharmaceutical substances.
In parallel with his research, Anders Hallberg has held a number of management positions at the University: head of department, dean for research, vice-chairman of the domain board, dean, and Vice-Chancellor. He has published more than 250 scientific articles in international journals, received a number of scientific awards, and won the pharmacy students’ prize for distinguished teaching.
